Jujube seed,
does it really help with Improvement in insomnia and sleep quality?
research showsThe 2023 meta-analysis included 'herbal formulas in which jujube seed was a key ingredient,' mixing Suanzaoren decoctions, multi-ingredient products, and combination teas. No direct human sleep-efficacy literature for jujube seed alone was identified, so the rating is deferred. Formulas containing jujube seed have a C-level signal, but it cannot be attributed to the seed alone.
ads claimSleep and insomnia claims for teas, powders, and pills transfer results from multi-herb Chinese medicine formulas to single-ingredient products. The dose and effect of jujube seed powder alone cannot be established from these data.
Useful facts when choosing a product
- Suanzaoren decoction traditionally includes poria, chuanxiong, anemarrhena, and licorice in addition to jujube seed.
- Main meta-analysis outcomes were patient-reported scales such as PSQI and ISI.
- Species, processing, extraction, and formula composition differed among trials.
- Long-term durability and objective sleep testing are limited.
What the research actually shows
Yang 2023 pooled nine RCTs with 905 participants of herbal formulas in which jujube seed was a key ingredient. The short-term subjective sleep result in four placebo-controlled trials with 406 participants was positive, but Suanzaoren decoctions, multi-ingredient products, and combination teas were mixed. Liu 2022 likewise evaluated 12 RCTs of multi-herb Suanzaoren decoction. No direct human efficacy literature for jujube seed alone was identified.
Why this is classified as ?
Formulas containing jujube seed have C-level evidence, but the interventions were decoctions, multi-ingredient products, and combination teas that cannot establish efficacy of the seed alone. Because direct single-ingredient human efficacy literature is absent, the grade is unknown rather than D and the score is null.
Counterpoint. A short-term sleep signal remains for formulas containing jujube seed. A future placebo-controlled trial of the seed alone can be rated separately.
Rejudgment record. Reassessment (cross-check reflected) — The 2023 meta-analysis included multi-herb formulas and combination teas centered on jujube seed, while no direct human efficacy literature for jujube seed alone was identified
